Portable vaping machines have become hugely popular in recent years. There are now many kits that can be bought, and an astounding range of vape oils that you can use in them. However, this demand has seen prices rise, and it isn’t always easy to know what the oil you buy contains. For this reason, many people are now turning to home-made alternatives. Here are some easy ways to turn shatter into vape oil, though it can be done with any type of concentrate.
Using Concentrates For Vape Oil

Concentrates are the main component for making vape oil. Essentially, the concentrate is the main parts of a plant that have been taken, leaving the parts you don’t want behind. The same process is used for fruit concentrates. Here are some of the different types of concentrate that you can use.
● Shatter
This is the basis from which budder and crumble are made and is brittle with a glass-like appearance. It is often created using different types of solvent extraction methods.
● Badder
Badder is created by whipping shatter at a low and even temperature. The resulting air
in the mixture causes varying densities.
● Crumble
Again this starts with shatter, but after whipping into the bladder, it is then dried in a vacuum
oven. The result is a honeycomb-like texture.
● Crystalline
This usually resembles coarse sugar or salt. It is created by adding the concentrate to boiling water and then allowing it to cool with a specialized stick in the container. This stick then starts to attract the crystals.
You may find that the different types of concentrate behave differently when making the vape oil. You will need to try the different types to find the one you prefer to use.
Making Mixing Solution
Part of the recipes calls for a mixing solution which helps the oil to vaporize and prevents the concentrate from hardening once cooled. Although you can easily buy this mixture online, some people prefer to make their own.
To make the mixing solution, you need:
● Propylene glycol
● Vegetable glycerine
The safe ratio for these is either 50:50 or 80:20. If you are unsure of what you are doing, or you don’t know if you have the right ingredients, then it is best to buy the pre-mixed solution.
Recipes
There are two main recipes for vape oil, one is slower than the other, but they create different results.
Method One
● ½ gram or more of shatter concentrate
● A small glass for the mixture
● A container for water
● Metal dab tool
● Syringe for filling the cartridge
● Natural Terpenes for flavoring if needed
1. Make a double boiler using the container filled with water and the small glass inside
2. Heat the water to 175 degrees Fahrenheit or 80-degree Celcius. The temperature
doesn’t need to be exact.
3. Add concentrate to the glass
4. Add mixing solution to a ratio of 1ml of the mixer to 1 gram of concentrate
5. Allow the mixture to get back to temperature
6. Stir until the concentrate dissolves. This can take anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple
of minutes.
7. Add flavoring if required
8. Syringe mixture into the cartridge
9. Allow cooling for 15 minutes
Method Two
This method produces more flavor, but a less potent mixture.
● ½ gram of concentrate
● Shot glass or small glass
● Metal dab tool
● Syringe for filling cartridges
● Mixer solution
● Natural Terpenes for flavoring if needed
1. Add shatter or another concentrate to the small glass
2. Add 1ml of mixer solution per 1 gram of concentrate
3. Microwave the small glass for 10 seconds
4. Stir until the concentrate has dissolved. For some concentrates, this will take longer than
others. Usually between 30 seconds to a couple of minutes.
5. You can add flavor at this point if needed
6. Syringe the mixture into the cartridge
7. Allow cooling for 15 minutes
After 15 minutes, the vape oil should have been soaked up by the wick or coils. Once the oil has been transferred, it can be used in any vaping setup you have. You can also experiment with the different flavors that you want.
Although this may seem like a difficult process, once you have completed it a couple of times, you will be able to easily turn to shatter into vape oil.
