Essential Oils for a Cough and their Benefits and Uses

A cough, dry cough and many other respiratory conditions can be quite troublesome and can cause a lot of discomforts. There are many essential oils for a cough which provide relief during coughs.  1. Essential oils for a cough: Hyssop oil


Hyssop oil is not a very popular oil but is very useful for a cough, inflammation of chest and all types of bronchial issues. Hyssop oil contains an antiseptic compound that helps to fight against viruses and bacteria. It is useful to cure lung inflammation.

Method to use hyssop oil:

Take a drop of hyssop oil rub on your chest.


Apply a few drops of oil on your back and massage.

 2. Essential oils for a cough: Lemon oil


Lemon oil is widely used oil for congestion and cough, and it is extracted from the lemon skin. Lemon oil contains antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial compounds. Research and studies suggest that lemon oil enhance the immune system and stops the growth of bacteria.

Method to use lemon oil:

Combine a drop of lemon oil with a drop of peppermint oil, a drop of lavender oil, a drop of frankincense oil and one tablespoon of honey. Mix everything properly and eat have this syrup immediately.

 3. Essential oils for a cough: Eucalyptus oil


Eucalyptus oil contains the element called cineole, which is helpful to treat a cough and respiratory infections. It is useful to loosen a cough and mucus. It also enhances your immune system.

Method to use eucalyptus oil:

Combine 20 drops of eucalyptus oil with 2 drops of peppermint oil, half cup of coconut oil, ¼ cup of olive oil and ¼ cup of beeswax. Put everything in one container and then put that container in a pan filled with ¼ hot water. Mix everything in the container and use this vapour rub as and when required.

 4. Essential oils for a cough: Basil oil


Basil oil is known to reduce the inflammation as it contains the antimicrobial compounds. Regular usage of basil oil can detoxify your body from bacteria.

Method to use basil oil:

Combine few drops of basil oil with one teaspoon of coconut oil. Mix properly and apply on your temples and massage.


You can always add basil a few drops of basil oil in your regular salad dressing and use in salad and can put a drop or two in any soup. It will give relief in congestion and cough.

 5. Essential oils for a cough: Sandalwood oil


Sandalwood oil contains anti-inflammatory, expectorant and antiseptic compounds. It improves your immune system and treats a cough and congestion.

Method to use sandalwood oil:

Just add few drops of sandalwood oil in a diffuser, it will spread in the entire room and will give comfort.


Combine few drops of sandalwood oil with sesame oil and apply on your back and chest.

 6. Essential oils for a cough: Thieves oil


Thieves’ oil is a mixture of lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, and rosemary oil. This blend has an antiviral, antiseptic and antibacterial property which is helpful to treat a cough and sore throat.

Method to use thieves’ oil:

Take two drops of thieves’ oil and apply on the throat and gently massage.


Take few drops of oil in your palms and rub your hands. Then cup your hands to the nose and inhale deep breaths for few minutes.

 7. Essential oils for a cough: Cypress oil


Cypress oil is sufficient to treat respiratory infections and is also useful to clear nasal passage.  It helps to eliminate congestion and phlegm. Cypress oil contains an ingredient called camphene that is responsible for stopping the growth of different kind of bacteria.

Method to use cypress oil as essential oils for a cough:

Take few drops of cypress oil and rub in your chest, apply on the back near spine and massage.


Take a bowl with hot water put few drops of cypress oil in it. Cover yourself and bowl with cloth or towel and inhale and take deep breaths.

 8. Essential oils for a cough: Thyme oil


Thyme oil has antibacterial, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. It makes your immune system strong and treats your respiratory system. It is useful to cure congestion, cough and sore throat caused by colds.

Method to use thyme oil:

Take a few drops of thyme oil and apply on throat and massage gently.
